Chinook Heavy-lift Choppers

The Air Force has stationed a Chinook helicopter - a twin-rotor heavy-lift chopper - at the airstrip in Uttarakhand's Chinyalisaur, where an emergency medical centre has been set up to treat the 41 workers trapped underground in the Silkyara tunnel.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed its latest heavy-lift helicopters CH-47F to take supplies to remote areas in the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh, officials said. The Boeing Chinook is among India's latest buy from the American firm along with the AH-64 Apache "tank buster" attack helicopters.

Twelve Indian Air Force pilots and as many flight engineers underwent a special training in the US to operate Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, which were inducted into the Indian Air Force or IAF on Monday.

In a major boost to the Army's firepower, four indigenously-developed and manufactured Dhanush howitzers would be inducted into the force for deployment on the front lines on March 26.
