Network giant Cisco is planning to restructure its business which will include laying off thousands of employees, as it seeks to focus on high-growth areas, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

A report in the Silicon Valley Business Journal said the company has decided to take this step in a 'rebalancing' act while 'rightsizing certain businesses.'

In the quarterly report, Cisco reported revenue of $11.9 billion in the three-month period, a decline of 1 per cent over the same period of last year.

Cisco Systems Inc's announcement on Wednesday that it plans to lay off 5,500 employees is unlikely to be the last round of Silicon Valley pink slips as hardware companies struggle to keep up with rapid technology shifts, analysts and recruiters said.

California-based Cisco is expected to announce the cuts within the next few weeks, the CRN report said.
