Malayalam to be granted status of classical language

Malayalam will soon be granted the status of a classical language. The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, today approved classifying Malayalam as a 'Classical Language', Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi.

Academic and literary circles in Kerala have resented the Kendra Sahitya Akademi language panel's reported stand against according classical status to Malayalam on the ground that it is a 'younger' language compared to Tamil and other southern languages.
