At least 48 people were killed when suspected Shebab militants from Somalia stormed into a Kenyan coastal town and launched a major assault on a police station, hotels and government offices, officials said Monday.

Dozens of Somali extremists wielding automatic weapons attacked a small Kenyan coastal town for hours, assaulting the police station and setting two hotels on fire.

At least four people were killed and several others injured after Al-Shabaab militants burnt down hotels and a police station in the coastal town of Mpeketoni town in the mainland part of Lamu District on the coast of Kenya on Sunday night, police said.

In a bid to step up security along the 974-km long coastline of Andhra Pradesh, the state government has decided to set up 15 marine police stations, in addition to the existing six ones and also appoint special police officers in coastal villages, a police official said.

Kerala government will take immediate steps to improve facilities at eight coastal police stations in the state by equipping them for rescue operations, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said.
