Almost six weeks after the Supreme Court ordered his arrest for contempt of court, former High Court judge CS Karnan, who retired last week, was arrested today at Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore by the West Bengal Police. He will be flown to Chennai tonight, brought to Kolkata tomorrow and sent to Presidency jail.

Eighty undertrials and prisoners at Central Jail in Coimbatore resorted to a one day fast on Monday protesting the delay in taking up their pleas on detaining them under the Goondas Act. Police said these prisoners, including those involved in robberies and house breaking, wanted the Advisory Committee to hear their petitions at the earliest.
