Signalling the growing interest in Indian-made coir and natural fibre products worldwide, nearly 15 countries are represented for the first time at Coir Kerala, the annual international expo which began here Sunday.

The upcoming Coir Kerala 2015 trade fair starting on February 1 would see the participation of 170 foreign buyers from 53 countries, a Kerala minister said today.

Congress-led UDF government in Kerala today asked the Centre to include new works like paddy cultivation, homestead farming, coconut farming and coir yarn production under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREG) Scheme.

A technology for making substitutes for wood from natural fibres like coir and jute for making furniture has been developed in Kerala, an official said. The process for making it utilises coir fibre as well as other natural fibres like banana and jute.
