Bear Grylls, the adventurer, TV host and author, is joining forces with artificial intelligence company Seekr to launch a new platform where kids can learn what he says is the next big survival skill - digital literacy.

World Computer Literacy Day was first marked in 2001 by an Indian company in response to a study that said that majority of computer users in the world are men.

Microsoft has collaborated with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and Capacity Building Commission (CBC) to enhance the functional computer literacy of nearly 2.5 million civil servants of the Government of India. The project will empower civil servants to provide efficient and effective citizen-centric services.

The 96-year-old great-grandmother from Kerala, the oldest to take a literacy test in the state, who scored 98 out of 100, has one of her wishes fulfilled. After being felicitated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, she had expressed her wish to learn how to operate a computer in her 'free time'.

Raghubar Das, Chief Minister for Jharkhand, yesterday said that tabs will be given to every school during the 2017-18 fiscal year to bring teachers and students up to date with the changing times. He also said that the gas connections for schools was also underlined in the upcoming budget year.

Jaitley said of the 168 million crore rural households across the country, 120 million did not have computers and unlikely to have digitally literate persons.

Faster computer literacy in India can help the internet economy touch $200 billion by 2020 to contribute five percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

"For the Internet Economy to touch $200 billion by 2020... we need to move at a fast pace towards computer literacy," said the Telecom Minister.

Computer literacy among students in Tamil Nadu has gone up from 12.6 per cent to 15.6 per cent after the free laptop distribution scheme for college students was launched, State Finance minister O. Panneeselvam said today.
