The streets of the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo were quieter than usual today at the start of a one-day general strike aimed at putting pressure on President Joseph Kabila to quit power when his mandate ends in December, witnesses said.

Congolese government forces launched strikes against Rwandan Hutu rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, military officials said, in the first combat since last month's announcement of a campaign to stamp out the group.
