Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted in the state legislature today that police personnel will not be appointed on a contractual basis and said Mumbai faces a shortage of around 10,000 cops.

The opposition in Maharashtra on Tuesday raised concerns over the plan to rope in "contractual personnel" by the Mumbai police and said the "risky" move will be detrimental to the force as well as to the public.

Some 20 police personnel were injured when a protest staged by contractual workers of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Thermal Power Plant in Madwa in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh turned violent on Sunday.

In a notification issued by the West Bengal government Finance (Audit) department, it was declared that all categories of female contractual employees including software personnel engaged directly by the state government departments and directorates will get maternity leave for a maximum period of 180 days.
