India Generated Over 18,000 Tonnes COVID-19 Waste Since June

India generated 18,006 tonnes of COVID-19 biomedical waste in the last four months, with Maharashtra contributing the maximum (3,587 tonnes) to it, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

COVID-19: Waste Masks, Gloves To Be Stored For 72 Hours Before Being Disposed

In its latest guidelines on disposal of COVID-19 waste, pollution watchdog CPCB or Central Pollution Control Board has directed that masks and gloves used by everyone, whether infected or not, should be cut and kept in paper bags for minimum 72 hours before disposing of them.

Noting that only 1.1 lakh of the 2.7 lakh healthcare facilities identified across the country are authorised under the biomedical waste management rules, the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday said serious efforts should be made to bridge this gap to avoid environmental hazards arising out of handling of COVID-19 disease.
