A frightening scenario is unfolding in Telangana's Warangal district that has been infamous as the cotton farmer suicide capital of the country. At least 21 farmers have killed themselves in the last two weeks in the district, including four farmer suicides in Parvathagiri Mandal that never used to report farmer suicides.

The recent deaths of at least 20 farmers and agricultural labourers due to pesticide poisoning in this cotton-growing district has shocked the country and earned the government the wrath of the country's top human rights body, the NHRC.

15-year- old Karamjit Kaur is in a state of shock, her father Sukhminder Singh, a 42-year- old farmer, consumed pesticide and hanged himself from a tree in his field, a day after he destroyed his pest ridden cotton crop. What is worrying the elders most is the repayment of Rs three lakh bank loan taken by the farmer.

The eyes of 12-year-old Vinoda well up with tears each time she recalls how her father said sorry to her before he died. A cotton farmer in Telangana's Medak district, Balanarasaiah had drunk pesticide last month, leaving behind his two children, his mother and a debt of Rs 3 lakh.
