Couple Who Sold Baby

A poverty-hit Odisha tribal woman, who was saddened by the birth of a second girl child, allegedly sold her eight-month-old daughter to a couple for a measly Rs 800, police said.

A Russian court on Monday jailed a woman for four years after she sold her newborn son for 166 euros ($205) to buy a plane ticket, court sources said.

A one-month-old baby girl, who was allegedly sold to a childless couple last month by her parents who are reeling under extreme poverty, was rescued from Tamil Nadu by Kerala Police and brought back to Palakkad early today, police said.

The couple from Sriganganagar in Rajasthan who decided to give up their 8 day old child for adoption in exchange of Rs 40,000 so that they could fund their two-year-old child's treatment, have now received some help. A local NGO, the Tapovan trust, has collected Rs 51,000 on their behalf.

A woman and her husband from Rajasthan were arrested on Thursday for "selling" their eight-day-old child to their neighbour for Rs. 40,000. They claim they needed the money for their two-year-old paralytic son's treatment.
