Court Restores Hadiya Marriage

The Supreme Court has set aside the Kerala High Court verdict and restored the inter-faith marriage of Hadiya and Shafin Jahan, saying the former had "absolute autonomy over her person."

After a year of forced separation and a legal fight that finally validated their marriage, Hadiya and her husband Shafin Jahan reached Kerala early today morning.

Kerala woman Hadiya is free to live with her husband, the Supreme Court ruled today, cancelling a Kerala High Court order annulling the 24-year-old's marriage to a Muslim man after converting to Islam. The judges said Hadiya is "at liberty free to pursue her endeavours," stating that the High Court should not have intervened.
