The Delhi High Court has asked the authorities to take a decision on payment of Rs 1 crore compensation to the family of a city police constable who died due to COVID-19.

The Congress on Wednesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "shrugging away" from its responsibility, a day after the government told the Supreme Court that it cannot be held liable to compensate for the deaths after Covid vaccination.

The government cannot be held liable to compensate for the deaths due to an adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) post administration of Covid-19 vaccines, the Centre has told the Supreme Court.

The Kerala High Court has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to "expeditiously" frame a policy for identifying those who died due to after effects of COVID-19 immunisation and compensating their dependents.

The Supreme Court permitted the Centre to conduct an inquiry into fake claims for ex-gratia compensation meant for family members of those who have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to file a detailed application on the issue of fake claims and also on limiting the time for filing compensation claims.
