Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday said the state government will give relief to poor farmers by bringing a one-time scheme to waive crop loans taken from nationalised banks.

Marking the rollout of the Rs 12,110 crore crop loan waiver scheme for over 16 lakh ryots in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Saturday gave away certificates to nine farmers in Chennai.

The crop loan waiver scheme announced by the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra is likely to cost the state exchequer Rs 20,000 crore, said an official on Wednesday.

Farmers whose crop loan, taken between April 2015 and March 2019, is more than Rs two lakh,will not be eligible for the loan waiver scheme announced by the Uddhav Thackeray-led 'Maha Vikas Aghadi' government in Maharashtra last week.

The Congress on Tuesday described the Rs 4,750-crore waiver on interest and penalty on farm loans announced by the Haryana government as an "electoral lollipop" and asked it to completely write off crop loans.

As many as 12,021 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra from 2015 to 2018 for reasons that included bank loans and crop failure, averaging eight deaths a day. This number is over double that of the preceding four-year period from January 2011 to December 2014, when 6,268 farmers killed themselves.

A day after assuring waiver of crop loans of small and marginal farmers in its manifesto, the DMK on Wednesday said that it would extend the benefit to all sections of farmers.
