Crypto Account Hack

Cryptocurrency exchange WazirX, which suffered a massive Rs 2,000 crore (about $234 million) cyber theft in July, is now facing scrutiny from top government agencies in the country.

This week, cyber criminals breached content creator Ranveer Allahbadia’s handles on YouTube, replaced related logos and images with those of Elon Musk and Tesla, as well as deleted all of the videos that were published on the pages. The channels started promoting a crypto fraud scheme, for hours before YouTube restored access to Allahbadia.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center received nearly 69,500 complaints from consumers in the US and abroad last year. Call center frauds, such as government impersonation scams, accounted for about 10 percent of cryptocurrency losses.

In a recent incident, McDonald’s Instagram account was hacked, leading to the promotion of a scam memecoin called ‘Grimace’. McDonald’s has managed to recover its account since the hack. All posts related to the Grimace memecoin and an edited bio have since been removed.

The hackers used his account to promote and sell the Meme token GUNIT, defrauding victims of $3 million.

In March this year, Scam Sniffer stated in its crypto phishing report that about 57,000 victims lost approximately $47 million (roughly Rs. 392 crore) to crypto phishing scams – with most percentage of scams facilitated by scammers working on X.

The X account of MicroStrategy was hacked in the early hours of Monday, February 26. The account was flooded with posts showing links where people could click and register for the airdrop of Ethereum-based ‘so-called official’ MSTR token.
