A cyberattack on Indonesia's national data centre compromised hundreds of government offices and caused long delays at the capital's main airport, with the hacker demanding an $8 million ransom, officials said Monday.

The Netherlands' Maastricht University fell victim to a massive ransomware attack in 2019, and has now partly received back its stolen money... which in the meantime more than doubled in value, a news report said on Saturday.

FBI Director Christopher Wray pleaded with public companies and other hacking victims to avoid paying ransom, saying he fears it will only embolden cyber criminals to ramp up future attacks.

The US Justice Department announced Monday that it had recovered more than half of the $4.4 million paid by Colonial Pipeline to Russia-based ransomware extortionists Darkside, who had forced the shutdown of a major fuel network.

The report reveals that the most active ransomware group reported in 2020 was Sodinokibi (also known as REvil), accounting for 22 percent of all ransomware incidents that X-Force observed. Hackers, who attacked websites of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh state power utilities, have demanded six Bitcoins (nearly Rs 20 lakh) as ransom to give description key to restore the sites, police said today.

"Meeting hackers' demands will not necessarily guarantee compliance from the hackers. In many cases, the likelihood of receiving decryption keys is almost nil."

"Ransomware has soared since 2012, with criminals lured by the promise of profit and ease of implementation," the European police agency said in a statement.

Researchers have concluded that Tuesday's Petya malware was not a ransomware attack but a wiper meant to destroy data.

Firms are working to recover its operations a day after being hit by a cyber attack linked to malware called Petya. The powerful cyber attack also spread as far as India and the United States.

As of early Monday, only about $50,000 had been paid in ransoms, according to Elliptic Enterprises.

The hunt was on for the culprits behind the assault, which was being described as the biggest cyber ransom attack ever.

An unprecedented global wave of cyberattacks, which affected over 45,000 computers in at least 74 countries since Friday evening, has also spread to India.

Computer and phone systems in more than a dozen hospitals and doctor's offices across England suffered large-scale failures Friday in a suspected cyberattack.
