At least 70 people have been killed in floods in three states, Bengal, Odisha and Manipur, because of rain in the aftermath of cyclone Komen. There are reports that a flash flood has destroyed a village in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spent Sunday night in office to monitor the flood situation in the state in the aftermath of Cyclone Komen which has hit large parts of Bengal, Odisha and Manipur. Around 70 people - 48 of them in Bengal alone - have died so far.

Though wind speeds have slowed down and the cyclone Komen has weakened into a depression as it crossed from Bangladesh into West Bengal late last night, the worry is of the continuing forecast of very heavy rains in the southern districts that the depression may bring.

The Cyclone Komen has lost impact after making landfall in coastal Bangladesh this evening. While it has triggered heavy rains in West Bengal and Odisha, the meteorological office said the wind speed has dropped and there is no reason to panic.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said her government was fully geared up to face any eventuality arising out of cyclone 'Komen'.

The West Bengal government has launched a helpline number for monitoring the flood situation in the state.

Heavy rains have been forecast in southern West Bengal by the meteorological department due to the cyclonic storm, Komen, which is likely to make landfall in Bangladesh. Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee cut short her visit to London and landed in Kolkata at 5pm today to personally oversee relief operations.

The deep depression over northeastern Bay of Bengal today intensified into cyclonic storm 'Komen' which is set to trigger heavy to very heavy rain coupled with squally surface wind in several areas of Odisha. After moving northwestwards, the cyclone lay centred around 440 kms east of Balasore, the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar said.
