The Centre is yet to approve a special financial package of Rs 7,340 crore sought by Kerala for rehabilitation and reconstruction of cyclone Ockhi-hit coastal villages, Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty said today.

Facing a severe financial crisis, the Kerala government today in its budget focussed on fiscal consolidation, restricting creation of new posts, purchase of vehicles and foreign tours, even as it reached out to fisherfolk with a Rs 2,000 crore package in the wake of cyclone Ockhi.

The recent Ockhi cyclone led to a piling up of 80 tonnes of plastic debris along the coasts of Kerala, Goa, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and particularly along the major beaches of Mumbai, the government said on Friday.

A total of 661 fishermen continue to remain missing in the aftermath of cyclone Ockhi, as per the figures available with the Union Government, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament on Wednesday.
