Veteran Bengali actor and former Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal died of a cardiac arrest in a Mumbai hospital early this morning, his wife said. He was 61.

Once a star known for roles in popular Bengali films like Guru Dakshina and Dadar Kirti, Trinamool Congress lawmaker Tapas Paul will spend the New Year in jail. 58-year-old Mr Paul has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged role in the Rose Valley chit fund scam.

Mr Pal, who received a Filmfare Award for his role in the 1980 movie Saheb, has featured in several Bengali films such as Dadar Kirti, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa, Pathbola and Khiladi.

A senior citizen fell to his death from the sixteenth floor of a building at Dadar Chowpatty near Kirti College yesterday. Manohar Dhansukh Shah (75) allegedly went to his balcony to get a breath of fresh air, when he slipped and fell.
