Death Warrants Against Nirbhaya Case Convicts

The parents of a 23-year-old woman who was brutally assaulted and gangraped in 2012 on Monday expressed hope that the four convicts will finally be hanged on March 3, the latest execution date fixed by a court after two earlier death warrants against the convicts were stayed.

Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, on Monday voiced hope that fresh death warrants would be issued against all four convicts by a Delhi court today.

After a Delhi court adjourned for February 17 the hearing on Nirbhaya's parents' petition seeking fresh death warrants against the convicts, her mother Asha Devi today said that she hopes the warrants will be issued on that day.

A Delhi court on Thursday sought the response of four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case on the petition of Tihar jail authorities seeking issuance of fresh death warrants against them. The response has to be submitted by Friday.

One of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya case, Mukesh Kumar Singh, on Saturday challenged the rejection of his mercy petition by the President in the Supreme Court, and sought dismissal of the death warrant scheduled to be carried out on February 1.

The sessions judge, who recently issued a death warrant against the four death row convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, has been transferred to the Supreme Court as Additional Registrar on deputation basis.

Two of the four men sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case have filed curative petitions in the Supreme Court, exercising the last legal option against the death sentence. Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh approached the top court two days after a Delhi court declared that the four rapists will be hanged at 7 am on January 22.

After a Delhi court on Tuesday ordered hanging of four Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder convicts on January 22, the BJP said justice has been delivered to the victim and that the verdict will empower women and strengthen people's faith in the judiciary.

The Congress today welcomed the issuance of death warrants against the four Nirbhaya case convicts saying it would give peace to her family and the country, but rued the delay in justice delivery.
