The Delhi government has approved amendments to its building bylaws banning rooftop as well as basement kitchens and stopping issuance of fire safety certificates to guest houses having more than four floors, days after a massive blaze at a hotel in Karol Bagh killed 17 people.

The gutted Arpit Palace Hotel in Delhi's Karol Bagh area appears to have been built on a slew of violations, with one of them being to not leaving any free space as per municipal by-laws and using 100 per cent of the land for building the hotel.

Delhi-ites will be now able to get a building plan approved within 30 days while no construction permission will be needed for plots up to 105 sq m in the national capital under new building by-laws notified on Monday.

The Union government has relaxed building bylaws in poll-bound Delhi, in which, among other things, sanctioning of building plans have been made easier.
