The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday launched a website for pre-registration of commercial vehicles for radio frequency identity (RFID) tags.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday banned the registration of diesel cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) with engines beyond 2,000 cc in Delhi. The court also doubled the green tax on commercial vehicles entering the city to tackle one of the worst-ever bouts of toxic smog that has hit Delhi.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday indicated that it may double the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) on commercial vehicles using the national capital as transit for their onward journey to other destinations to curb the capital's alarming pollution levels.

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on December 10 a plea of a consortium which levies toll on behalf of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from commercial vehicles entering Delhi, that the civic body be restrained from encashing its bank guarantee allegedly due to drop in tax collection.

The toll tax contractor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been collecting around Rs 1.25 crore of Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) every day since the 'green tax' was levied on trucks and other commercial vehicles entering Delhi as per a Supreme Court order.

Trucks and other commercial vehicles entering Delhi will now have to pay Economic Compensation Charge as the toll contractor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation has agreed to collect the green tax, along with toll tax, from midnight today as per direction of the Supreme Court.

At around midnight on Sunday, a group of experts and officials were at Delhi's border with Gurgaon for a surprise inspection. What they learnt is this - the Supreme Court had imposed a green tax of Rs 700 and Rs 1,300 on commercial vehicles entering Delhi, but on Day 1, not a single rupee had been charged.

From Sunday, commercial vehicles entering Delhi will have to shell out 'Environment Compensation Charge' (ECC) ranging from Rs 700 to Rs 1300 with the Supreme Court refusing to modify its earlier order on the issue.

Starting next month, diesel-guzzling trucks and commercial vehicles entering Delhi will have to pay a surcharge, after the Supreme Court today announced a trial plan to improve the capital's notoriously filthy air.
