Despite a mid year policy switch and ongoing probe by central agencies, the Delhi government managed to gross "the highest ever" excise revenue of Rs 5,548.48 crore in 2022-23, officials said on Saturday.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said the city government has earned 23 per cent less revenue in the current financial year, but it will gain Rs 10,000 crore from bidding of liquor shops under the new excise policy.

The legal age for drinking in Delhi has been brought down from 25 to 21, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia informed on Monday. Announcing a new liquor policy, he said the Delhi government is expecting a hike of at least 20 percent in its annual excise revenue with the reforms.

Liquor will soon be served across hotels and restaurants in Delhi that have the license to do so, but bars will not be open yet. The Finance Ministry in a statement said that tax collection of Rs 17.10 lakh crore in 2016-17 is a growth of around 18 per cent compared to last year.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today asked the revenue officials to beef up their tax collection efforts to achieve the budgeted target. "This was a difficult year for the economy including for revenue collection because there was less imports and manufacturing activity was also slackening," Mr Chidambaram said.

In order to check the black money and tax evasion, an online data bank is being setup by the Finance Ministry for effective coordination and dissemination of various inputs pertaining to illegal funds.
