Delhi Heat Action Plan

As Delhi boils at scorching temperatures reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius, the capital's electricity usage has reached an incredible peak of 8,000 MW today, its highest-ever peak power demand.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which prepared the plan and submitted it to the Centre last month, also plans a pilot project to paint roofs in identified areas with white colour to help keep the indoors cooler.

Delhi will alter school timings, suspend non-essential water use and survey vulnerable locations daily to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on susceptible populations in peak summers, according to the city's new heat action plan.

Most parts of India are expected to see above-normal temperatures and more heatwave days this summer season but the national capital is yet to implement a heat action plan (HAP), four years after the Centre recommended it to do so.
