The railways will implement a Rs 18,000-crore project to operate trains at a speed of 160 kmph on the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes by upgrading infrastructure, Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav said on Tuesday.

Railways will be able to run passenger trains "on demand" and free of "waiting" list on the busiest Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes in the next four years with the construction of dedicated freight corridors by 2021, Railway Board Chairman V K Yadav said on Tuesday.

The centre has approved the Railways' proposal to increase the train speed on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes to 160 kmph which will reduce travel time by 3.5 hours and five hours respectively, making them overnight journeys.

The railways will soon add a new train to its fleet of Rajdhani expresses by starting another Delhi-Mumbai service covering Kalyan, Nasik and Khandwa in the Central Railway zone in Maharashtra, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said today

Encouraged by the good response to premier AC special trains on the Delhi-Mumbai route being run on dynamic fares, Railways have decided to extend the services of these trains to cater the growing demand for travel on the busy route during the festive season up to the New Year.
