Petrol prices in Delhi retail at Rs 76.78, Rs 84.61 in Mumbai, Rs 79.44 in Kolkata and Rs 79.69 in Chennai

It is a misconception that bringing petroleum products under the Goods and Services Tax, or GST, will lead to lower fuel prices, Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said on Saturday.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that consumers will benefit if petrol and diesel are brought under Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

The price of petrol in Delhi on Monday was at Rs 73.83 a litre, which marks a four-year high.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today came out in defence of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and notes ban, saying new shoes bite for the first few days, but become comfortable to wear thereafter.

"We are trying to build the consensus with the state governments on this issue democratically," said Mr Pradhan.

Looking into the consumer interest, there must be tax rationalisation, the Oil Minister said.
