Livelihood of more than 30,000 drivers and their families is in jeopardy with the Supreme Court banning their diesel-run taxis from plying in Delhi-NCR region, the union of drivers said.

After the Delhi government, the Centre has now approached the Supreme Court seeking relief from the crackdown it ordered on diesels cabs in Delhi and neighbouring areas. The ban will impact the BPO industry which uses diesel-run taxis to ferry employees and earns the country billions of dollars every year, the government said.

Delhi Police today booked over a hundred diesel-run taxi drivers for running their vehicles in the city violating the Supreme Court ban, even as cab drivers protesting against the crackdown by police threw traffic out-of-gear by blocking National Highway 8 and the Ring Road.

Commuters may face inconvenience as nearly 27,000 diesel-run taxis will not be allowed to run on the capital's roads from today after the Supreme Court on Saturday refused to extend the April 30 deadline fixed for their conversion into CNG mode.
