In a bizarre case, a man was allowed by a court here to give Rs 55,000 in 1 and 2 rupee coins to his wife as maintenance dues for 11 months after his family brought the money filled in seven sacks to the court following his arrest for non-payment.

A woman cannot be compelled to work to eke out a living, merely because she is educated, the Bombay High Court observed, while hearing a man's plea against a court order directing him to pay maintenance to his estranged wife.

The Supreme Court has said that courts cannot force a husband to "keep his wife" as it asked a man, a pilot by profession, to deposit Rs 10 lakh as interim maintenance for his estranged wife and upkeep of their son.

An NRI man has been directed by a Delhi court to pay Rs 50,000 per month as maintenance to his wife along with a compensation of Rs five lakh for causing her "mental trauma, economic and physical harassment".
