Punjab's ruling Congress celebrated an early Diwali today as it dislodged the BJP from its stronghold of Gurdaspur in the Lok Sabha by-elections. With the main opposition party AAP also in the running, the triangular contest was seen as a prestige battle for the ruling party, which won the assembly elections in the state six months ago.

In turmoil-hit Punjab, the festival of lights, Diwali, will be dimmed this year. After protests over the alleged desecration of the holy book 'Guru Granth Sahib', the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee has announced that the Golden Temple will neither be adorned with fancy lights nor would it witness any fireworks this Diwali.

While many of us do get the chance to celebrate Diwali with our families, one family in Punjab has been waiting for a member for decades. Sarabjit Singh, who has been in Pakistan jail on charges of being an Indian spy, will not be home this Diwali. His family is hoping the Pakistan government will show mercy and free him soon.
