Diwali Postage Stamp

Over 20 countries, including two UN Security Council permanent members France and the UK, have supported a dedication ceremony hosted by India to commemorate the release of a Diwali postage stamp by the US.

A stamp with an Indian 'diya' or lamp on its face was launched by the US postal service at the Indian consulate today to commemorate the festival of Diwali. The stamp shows a traditional 'diya' lit against a sparkling background, and the words 'Forever USA 2016' written below.

The US Postal Service on Tuesday said it will issue a Diwali postage stamp, meeting one of the long pending demands of Indian-American community in the United States.

In a boost to efforts being made for issuing of a postage stamp on Diwali by the US Postal Service, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to a request to write to President Barack Obama on the issue, said members of a group who have been pushing the case.

The Indian-American community in the US has launched a campaign demanding a postage stamp on Diwali by next year, saying it is the only big festival for which the US Postal Service has not issued a stamp.
