The two thieves who brutally robbed 27-year-old Marieke Bayens at gunpoint on a California street were not after her purse -- or her. They wanted the little dog at the end of her leash: Merlyn, a French bulldog.

While Brazil's economy is in the doghouse, one underground business is bucking the trend -- dognapping.

A guide dog, whose abduction sparked an outcry in China, has been returned to its desperate handler with an apology note, state media reported today. Qiaoqiao, a seven-year-old Labrador was reportedly taken by a group of men on Monday, while being taken on a walk outside of the Chinese capital.

Police in New Hampshire say they have collared the humans responsible for snatching 13 puppies from a New Hampshire pet store in a smash-and-grab dognapping.
