NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul on Wednesday asked fellow citizens not to panic about the new COVID-19 variant JN.1 and assured them that the Centre is taking the necessary precautions to combat the new variant.

On a day Mumbai reported 8,063 fresh coronavirus positive cases, civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal on Sunday sought to allay apprehensions of citizens, saying that 89 per cent of the infections are asymptomatic and 90 per cent of beds are vacant.

The Sensex and Nifty traded 0.5 per cent lower on Monday, while the rupee fell sharply to tumble past the psychological 67 per dollar mark in morning deals. The weakness in markets comes ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting this week in which the US central bank is likely to decide on raising rates for the first time in nearly one decade.
