Pakistani scientist Dr Khalil Chishty acquitted of murder by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today freed Pakistani microbiologist Dr Mohammad Khalil Chisti in connection with a murder case. The court said Dr Chishty has already spent one year and four months in prison and no further custody is required.

Dr Khalil Chishty, a Pakistani scientist who has spent many years at a prison in Ajmer is likely to walk out of jail today. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Monday. The Supreme Court order for Dr Chishty's bail has reached Ajmer, but will first have to be presented in the Ajmer sessions court.

The 78-year old virologist, who is critically ill, is serving life sentence in the Ajmer Central Jail. His mercy plea has been given clearance by the Rajasthan Chief Minister, but he has still not been released.
