Drug Abuse In Youth

With seminars and sports events, the Punjab Police is spreading awareness about the perils of drug abuse among the youth, officials said on Saturday.

Around 13 percent of the those involved in drug and substance abuse in India are below 20 years of age, which calls for stepping up community intervention and preventive mechanisms targeting adolescents, an UN official said on Thursday.

On June 26, a total of 60000 students from 130 schools in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh participated in a webinar on ‘Role of Children and Youth in making India Drug-Free’ to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Congress today attacked the BJP government in Haryana, alleging that its "incompetence" pushed the state's youth into the "dangerous web of drug abuse" and demanded a white paper on the matter.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said drug abuse in some parts of the country is causing an alarm and youths should be protected from it.

As part of its ongoing campaign against drug abuse among the youth, the Kerala government plans to bring in a legislation preventing sale of intoxicanting substances, including tobacco products, within 500 metres of any educational institution in the state.

It is a problem that is threatening the future of generation next in rural Punjab - drug and substance abuse. According to a research, 65 percent of youth in and around the border area of Amritsar are addicted to alcohol and drugs.
