Switching off lights and electrical appliances during the Earth Hour initiative this year, Delhi saved around 290 MW of power, the capital's distribution companies (discoms) announced on Sunday.

The lights are being switched off around the world at 8:30 pm on Saturday evening, to mark the 10th annual Earth Hour, and to draw attention to climate change. Prominent buildings and monuments in India including the India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan turned dark for the occasion.

Earth Hour 2017 will be celebrated on Saturday, March 25 at 8:30pm to 9:30pm (local time wherever you are); participants need to turn all non-essential lights off for these 60 minutes.

A 'leap second' was added to the Indian clock at 5:29.59 hours today to synchronise with the Earth's rotational clock.
