Eco-friendly Durga Puja

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today congratulated the residents for supporting the government over its move to prohibit immersion of Durga idols in the Yamuna in the national capital on Tuesday. Mr Kejriwal also praised government officials for the smooth conduct of the event.

In a move away from tradition, the B Block CR Park Durga Puja Committee decided to bid adieu to Durga in an eco-friendly way. The residents dug two pits (5 feet by 10 feet) in their colony park and covered it with a tarpaulin to hold water.

Though Kolkata hosts the largest celebration of Durga Puja, Delhi isn't far behind. The heat is oppressive, the crowds pulsating, and the smells overwhelming in the capital's Bengali hub Chittaranjan Park, which is buzzing with people and the sounds of the traditional drum, dhaak.

In South Delhi's Chittaranjan Park, the Durga Puja celebrations which ended on Tuesday with the immersion of Goddess Durga's idols, was green all the way.

As Delhi gets ready for nights of revellery for the much awaited final days of Durga puja, artisans brought from Bengal are busy giving the final touches to the decorations at the Mela ground using eco-friendly techniques made with sholapit, which is peculiar to West Bengal.

Puja committees across Delhi seem to have gone all out to ensure that the idols of goddess Durga are made using eco-friendly materials.

Preservation, the essential theme of the Devi Durga lore, is this year the driving concept for the annual festivities as organisers of the various pujas adopt green methods for building shamianas and explore techniques for reducing their carbon footprint.
