Bijlee, a 58-year-old elephant, collapsed under her own weight on June 11 in suburban Mulund. Weighing 5000 kilograms, the pachyderm is suffering from degenerative joint disease brought on by her obesity. She now needs to go on a crash diet to lose 1500 kilos.

Everyone must be aware of the idiom "even a dead elephant is worth a lakh". However, very few would know that the hair of the giant animal too fetches a hefty sum. According to Plants and Animal Welfare society, an NGO, mahouts in the city are minting money by selling the hair plucked from the elephant's tail.
