Member of the Supreme Court appointed Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar Dam Justice K T Thomas today said it was unfortunate that some quarters had sought to politicise and whip up emotions on the panel's report, instead of looking at it rationally.

Amid reports that the Supreme Court Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar had found that the 119-year-old Mullaperiyar dam was safe, Kerala Water Resources Minister PJ Joseph on Saturday maintained that a new dam was the only solution to the long dispute with Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said that the state government's stand on the Mullaperiyar dam has been vindicated by the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee's report which concluded that the structure was safe.

The five-member Empowered Committee - appointed by the Supreme Court - over the raging controversy on the Mullaperiyar Dam today rejected Kerala's demand to reduce the water level to 120 feet in the disputed structure. The committee said since the Supreme Court had ordered water level to be at 136 feet, it can't reduce the level to 120 feet.

As the controversy over the Mullaperiyar dam rages on, the two-member expert panel constituted by the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee today submitted its report on the safety of the disputed structure. Kerala, however, claimed that the panel's report was biased and opposed its consideration by the five-member committee.

Adding a new dimension to the raging Mullaperiyar reservoir row, Kerala officials today stayed away from the visit of the Supreme Court-appointed empowered committee experts alleging that they had declined to properly hear the state's views on the dam's safety aspects.

Technical experts on the Supreme Court-appointed empowered committee on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue will inspect the 116-year-old dam today.
