Engine-less Train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that people who are "mocking" India's first engine-less train Vande Bharat Express, which suffered technical problems on its inaugural run on Saturday, should be "punished" for "insulting" India's engineers and technicians.

On its first run on the tracks with passengers on board, India's first engine-less train Vande Bharat Express, or Train 18, ran at a top speed of 130 kmph on Friday, flagging off a new niche for semi-high speed trains in India.

Train 18, the country's first engine-less semi-high speed train, is likely to start operating by December 15, a senior railway ministry official told PTI.

The trial run of the country's engine-less train will be conducted today on the Bareilly-Moradabad section. "Train 18", developed by the Integral Coach Factory and seen as a successor to the Shatabdi Express, was unveiled last month by Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani.

Vested interests are trying to "fail" India's first locomotive- less train or Train 18, a top official said on Friday, adding there was nothing to worry about the glitches that occurred during a trial run.
