India's Vodafone Idea has finalised a $3.6 billion (roughly Rs. 30,066 crore) deal with Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung for supply of equipment over the period of three years. Supplies under the new contract will start arriving in the coming quarter, Vodafone Idea said, adding that its top priority remains to expand the 4G coverage. 

As many as 31 million smartphone users in India are expected to upgrade to 5G phones between now and December, a report by Ericsson said on Tuesday underlining the accelerated pace at which the world's second largest telecom market is adopting the ultra high-speed services. 

Nokia reported a sharp fall in second-quarter profits on Thursday, dragged down by a drop in investment by North American mobile phone operators. The 5G deployment in India drove growth for its mobile network business. But net sales fell in North America as clients continue to review their spending and reduce their inventory levels.

Reliance Jio Infocomm is reportedly gearing up to sign a contract worth $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 14,016 crore) with Nokia this week to purchase 5G network equipment. The contract could be signed as early as Thursday in Helsinki, Finland. HSBC, JP Morgan and Citigroup are reportedly backing Jio's 5G-related purchases.

Nokia on Thursday said that the company's Q3 operating profits, which rose EUR 658 million (roughly Rs. 5,500 crore) from EUR 633 million (roughly Rs. 5,150 crore) last year, were below market expectations. The company said that it expects growth on a constant currency basis in its markets in 2023.

Jio has selected Nokia as a major supplier, according to the Finnish telecom equipment maker. The company will provide Jio with 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment in a multi-year deal, ahead of its plans to roll out 5G services to over 420 million users.

Airtel has announced that the rollout of its 5G services in India will commence in August. Within days of bidding for spectrum in auctions, Bharti Airtel on Wednesday announced it has signed 5G network agreements with gear makers Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung to commence deployment this month.

Qualcomm, Ericsson and Thales unveiled a plan for ‘space-based network’ that will allow smartphones to communicate directly with satellites. For these, the tech firms plan to launch hundreds of satellites with 5G capabilities. Thales said a rollout of 600 to 800 satellites could begin within four or five years.
