The Supreme Court has allowed Exxon Valdez, which caused one of the worst US oil spills, to be dismantled in the country but required the owner to pay for disposal of any toxic materials found on the ship.

India's Supreme Court has banned the Exxon Valdez from entering India, saying the ship involved in one of the worst U.S. oil spills will not be allowed in for dismantling until it has been decontaminated.

Big oil spills are no longer news in this vast, tropical land. The Niger Delta, where the wealth underground is out of all proportion with the poverty on the surface, has endured the equivalent of the Exxon Valdez spill every year for 50 years by some estimates.
