Fatal Motor Accident

Six people, including two children, were killed and three injured in two separate accidents in Rajasthan's Banswara and Ajmer districts, police said on Thursday.

The Centre on Thursday informed the Lok Sabha that the number of road accidents and fatalities have reduced as well as the government has earned over Rs 577 crore revenue through challans since the implementation of Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The hefty fines under the new Motor Vehicle Act may not be enough to battle India's problem of traffic and road accidents or that is what the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) believes.

The Supreme Court today ordered all states to amend their rules under the Motor Vehicles Act whereby uninsured motor vehicles involved in accidents, both fatal and non-fatal, will be auctioned and the proceeds deposited with the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) to pay compensation to victims.

Iterating the need for safer roads was the second edition of the India Vision Zero, road safety conference held in Mumbai on 5-6th June 2017. Organised by World Research Institue (WRI) Cross Center and Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department, the event had Global NCAP representatives that congratulated India on this development.

The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha last August and was referred to a parliamentary standing committee, whose suggestions have been endorsed by the Union Cabinet.
