Jack Ely, whose 1963 song "Louie Louie" was so unintelligible that the US government investigated it for secret messages, has died aged 71, his family said Tuesday.

The fitness tests, which started at the end of last year, are a return to a tradition begun by the FBI's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, who obsessed about his agents' weight, as well his own considerable girth.
