A fire broke out in a state-run hospital block here on Wednesday and over 100 patients were swiftly shifted by officials averting a major mishap and the blaze was doused in a 3-hour battle by firefighters, authorities said.

Hindi will not be thrust upon any state, the government said on Sunday, stepping up its damage control amid a controversy over the draft version of the National Education Policy 2019, which is seen by many in the southern states as an attempt to impose Hindi on school students.

The Tamil Nadu government today sanctioned over Rs 30 crore towards procuring modern equipment for the fire and rescue services department. This includes providing 1,980 personnel with modern gear, including gumboots, fireproof helmets and masks, a state government press release here said.
