For three consecutive years from 2012, Bundelkhand region in central India was hit by a crippling drought. This year, when the rain started, farmers and villagers finally hoped there would be some relief. But slowly that hope is now fading, with many areas now facing flood fury.

For the last four days , 42-year-old Doda Yadav , a farmer in eastern Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, part of a village in the riverine areas of Ganga, has barely managed to venture out of his two-room house. When he does, it is only by using a rope that he has strung from his home to the closest possible higher ground -- about 20 metres away.
