A 16-year-old boy was killed in south Kolkata's Gariahat area on Monday when he got into a fight with his friend over a game, police said.

Five days after the death of a class 10 student, another student in a prominent south Kolkata school attempted suicide by slitting her wrist but was saved by the prompt action of school authorities, police said on Wednesday.

A major blaze broke out early today at a garment store in the southern part of Kolkata's Gariahat area, gutting goods worth lakhs and destroying multiple shops next to the building, a senior official of the fire department said.

Rain or sun does not bother them, neither does the cacophonous traffic nor the incessant clamour of a packed city. Their dream is to get World champion Vishwanathan Anand to visit their "club", the concrete railing under a busy flyover where a clutch of chess aficionados concentrate on games over which rulers once traded kingdoms.
