A natural gas well in California that spewed more than 100,000 tons of the harmful greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere was the largest methane leak in US history, researchers said Thursday.

The governor of California on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in a Los Angeles community where a massive gas leak has forced thousands of nearby residents from their homes.

The utility serving areas damaged by Sunday's earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area says it expects to continue searching for possible gas leaks over the coming days.
