Girl Undergoes Liver Transplant

A five-month-old girl from West Bengal, whose life was hanging by a thread after suffering an acute liver failure, received a new lease of life when she underwent a 10-hour long transplant surgery at a city hospital from the organ donated by her mother, doctors said Tuesday.

A 17-month-old baby girl from Raipur has become the youngest child in western India to undergo a liver transplant - from her donor dad - at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, an official said on Tuesday.

The surgery performed on young Alannah Shevenell, sought to remove an aggressive cancerous growth festering since 2008, and that had attacked her stomach, liver, pancreas, esophagus, small intestine and spleen.
