Goa Drug Problem

The recent death of a young holiday-maker due to suspected drug overdose in Goa has once again showed that drug cartels are flourishing in the state, the Shiv Sena said on Wednesday.

There is no drug mafia in Goa, but drugs are smuggled into the state for "trade, consumption and transit", Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said during the ongoing Budget Session of the state legislative assembly on Wednesday.

Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday conceded there was an increase in the number of drug peddlers in the state, while a ruling party legislator alleged in the assembly that drugs in Goa were being sold in connivance with police officials.

Amid a string of attacks on Africans in Delhi, Goa Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar today demanded a strict law to deport Nigerians, claiming that they come in conflict with Indian law so as to extend their stay and indulge in drugs and other crimes.
